Water & Land Research

Whilst "Where Water Meets Land" was initially formed as a project revolving around the question of what fate would befall Iken Church in the event of the anticipated future flooding of the area, it has evolved into a celebration of the natural environment and peoples access to it.

The research is now an argument for the use of managed realignment on the Alde Estuary boundary.

With the focus now on the landscape surrounding the church, the question becomes whether predicted flooding could be seen as an opportunity to return the currently artificially drained land to its original state as salt-marsh through the process of managed realignment, and the church to its original state as a place of contemplation, surrounded by water.

The process culminated in the proposal of a managed realignment scheme, an accessible 'journey' around the subsequently created marshland, and a visitor and education centre for guests and locals alike, to support access to the newly recovered landscape.
